Grammy for Bangalore-based fusion musician Ricky Kej

Kej's album, "Winds of Samsara", which he co-produced with South African flautist Wouter Kellerman, has sounds inspired from India and the African continent, and had debuted at #1 on the US Billboard New Age Albums Chart late last year.

Bangalore-based fusion musician Ricky Kej  won the Best New Age Album award at the 57th Grammy Awards at the Staples Center on Sunday, in Los Angeles.

Kej's album, "Winds of Samsara", which he co-produced with South African flautist Wouter Kellerman, has sounds inspired from India and the African continent, and had debuted at #1 on the US Billboard New Age Albums Chart late last year.

The album is Kej's 14th and also includes a number in tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Another Bangalore musician, Prakash Sontakke, has co-composed the album.
"Winds of Samsara" edged out "Bhakti" by Paul Avgerinos, "Ritual" by Peter Kater and R Carlos Nakai, "Symphony Live In Istanbul" by Kitaro, and "In Love And Longing" by Silvia Nakkach and David Darling, to win its category.

Kej, 33, an American citizen, was born into a family of doctors in North Carolina and moved to Bangalore when he was eight years old. He attended Bishop Cotton Boys' School and acquired a degree in dentistry from Oxford Dental College, although he didn't practice even for a day.

The world of music soon won him over. A self-taught musician, he was part of now defunct local Bangalore outfits such as Angel Dust, University and Techno Rave Band.

“I started playing around with the guitar in the ninth standard. In college, I was playing with Angel Dust, during which I got more serious and disciplined with band practices,” he was quoted as saying in a newspaper in 2008.

Once Kej parted ways with Angel Dust, he discovered the infinite possibilities of computer-assisted composing, and a whole new universe opened to him. He set up his own recording studio and over a thousand advertising jingles followed, as also a composition for the 2011 Cricket World Cup opening ceremony, before Kej took the next logical step - into Kannada films.

His style draws from myriad sources, sounds he was exposed to as a child in the US, and later influences that exerted themselves on him in India.
For someone who once claimed 'I have no life other than music', a Grammy award must be the culmination of a lifetime's desire.

Be watchful of the perfumes you use – Our expert tells you why!

We may boast of our perfume fragrances and often let it be a part of our identity, but we should look beyond its physical properties now. These are commonly a part of cosmetic fragrances, deodorants, body mists, colognes, and many air fresheners, fabric softeners, detergents and candles. Since they do come in contact with our skin, we must know the harmful effects they carry. Dr Shefali Trasiinforms us about what we must be watchful about.
What is the effect they can have on different types of skin?
It can cause pigmentation and allergies on sensitive skin, as well as on dry skin. It is also a concern of worry for people who are already prone to severe pigmentation. Regular use of perfumes can also lead to change in skin colour. Here is how you can get rid of skin pigmentation and freckles.
In what cases should people avoid using fragrances?
People who already have pigmentation or pigmented skin, allergic tendencies (strong smell), or those suffering from atopic dermatitis must not use perfumes.
What ingredients particularly cause skin allergies?
Fragrance substances and alcohol content are harmful enough and cause unwanted skin allergies. Here are some ingredients should be careful of in cosmetics.
What precautions or damage control methods should one keep in mind?
Preferably, apply the perfume on clothes and not directly on your body or any skin area. Also, here is why you should go make-up free once in a while.
It’s best to do a patch test first and check if fragrances leave stains on your clothes. It’s best to skip such scents if they do. Also, be wary of chemical ingredients like acetone, ethanol, benzyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, mythelene chloride, diethyl phthalatecamphor, and limonene mentioned on the packaging of perfumes. Consult your dermatologists immediately. These may cause itchy skin, migraines. The reactions of these and other ingredients could vary keeping your medical record in mind.
Instead, slather a preferred essential oil for a chemical free scent after a bath or try making your own fragrance at home, here is how.

Five essential travel experiences in Kutch

Kutch nahin dekha to kuch nahin dekha is not just a marketing tag line. India's largest district has so much to offer that one visit is barely an appetiser

Kutch nahin dekha to kuch nahin dekha is not just a marketing tag line. During my recent visit to the largest district in India, I realized the truth behind that line rendered in Amitabh Bachchan’s booming baritone. Almost every destination in India is unique and, yet, Kutch seems to surpass them in its sheer variety. Landscapes, monuments, talented people – the list goes on. Not just tourists, even birds flock here in large numbers. I was there for just five days last year and I could come up with five reasons to visit this region, but am sure there are more.
The fascinating white Rann of KutchThe fascinating white Rann of Kutch
1. The White Rann
If you believe that there is something magical about nature, you have to visit the “White Rann” to believe it. The Rann of Kutch refers to a land which alternates between being dry and wet according to the seasons and is virtually uninhabitable. The shallow marshlands are under water during the monsoons and when the wetlands dry up, they leave behind an ocean of salt. In the Greater Rann of Kutch, the white sands are an absolute showstopper. I have heard that it is dazzling on a full moon night, but I was content to gaze at them during sunrise and sunset, primarily the former. I had the entire landscape to myself and, standing there, I was freezing in the cold, watching the sun rise from the white horizon, lighting up the snow white crystals of salt. It was simply mesmerising.
Crafts-making is a major part of the Kutch experienceCrafts-making is a major part of the Kutch experience
2. Crafts, craftsmen and women
The heart of Kutch lies in its villages and you can go village hopping, watching craftsmen and women at work. Almost every hamlet specializes in one craft and just a handful of families practise it. I started my crafts tour at Bhujodi, where I saw the weavers at work creating magic with their fingers. I went to Ajrakpur, another textile haven where families practice block printing. Another village on the must-see list is Nirona, where a unique craft called Rogan art is practised. I was told it’s the only place in India where this art, which has its origins from Persia, is still practised using castor oil. I met the bell makers of Nirona and the craftsman who creates a riot of colours with lacquer on wooden spoons and rolling spins, before leaving to Kavda where pottery is in demand. There are several other villages specializing in jewellery to bandhini and you can spend days watching these artisans at work as they tempt you to buy their creations. If you have been to Kutch and you have not been to the villages then believe me, you have not seen Kutch at all.
Praj Mahal in Bhuj, KutchPraj Mahal in Bhuj, Kutch
3. A tryst with Bhuj
It was Bollywood that introduced me to Bhuj and yet, I was told that it is mentioned in the Mahabharata when the Pandavas are exiled. It was an earthquake, however, that created a jolt and even today the old city bears the brunt of it. The headquarters of Kutch, Bhuj is a 16th century capital of a princely state and its royal status can still be seen in the forts and palaces strewn around the old town. The Praj Mahal and Aina Mahal stand adjacent to each other, taking you to the glorious era. The former is built in a lavish Gothic style while the walls of the latter was built with marble and adorned with mirrors. Bhuj still retains the magic of its past. I would recommend at least half a day in Bhuj, walking through the markets, bingeing on dabelis, and revisiting history at the palaces and the fort.
Vijay Vilas in MandviVijay Vilas in Mandvi
4. Mandvi
A destination for me is not very special if it does not have a beach. So I decided to head to Mandvi to soak my feet in the waves of the Arabian Sea. Mandvi was one of the oldest ports and a summer retreat for the old Maharajas. You can see the Vijay Vilas palace and the harbour even today in the city. But what really fascinated me was the 400-year-old ship-building industry. Small wooden ships are built here even today by the local people. As the water ebbed during the low tide, I walked, watching the ships in various stages of completion as flamingos flocked around them.
Great white pelicans at MandviGreat white pelicans at Mandvi
5. Pelicans and flamingos everywhere
Birds of a feather flock together and if you are a birder like me, you do not have to go looking for water birds in Kutch. They are virtually everywhere – lakes, nallahs, creeks, marshes, swamps, rivers, and oceans. Just look for any water body and they are there. I saw huge blocks of great white pelicans in Bhuj and greater and lesser flamingos in the lakes around Mandvi. Giving them company were black-winged stilts, red-wattled lapwings, and spotbill ducks among other waders and water birds. All I had to do was to stop by a lake and perch myself there for hours until the heat of the sun drove me away.

Bengaluru rated most liveable city in India

Bengaluru, Jan 22 (IANS) A leading international rating agency has certified Bengaluru as the most liveable location in India, followed by Mumbai and Chennai.
Though Bengaluru is ranked 171 in the global liveability index, the tech hub has scored favourably over metros and other cities across the country in terms of overall quality of living, while New Delhi has been rated as the least liveable, with worst air quality.
"In India, Bangalore (Bengaluru), which is ranked 171 globally, scores most favourably followed by Mumbai and Chennai both ranked 182. New Delhi, ranked 204, is the least liveable, with worst score for air quality like Beijing is in the world," ECA International said in a statement Thursday from London.
As the leading provider of knowledge, information and technology for the management and assignment of employees the world over, ECA rated Singapore as the most liveable location in Asia and globally, followed by Sydney and Adelaide in Australia.
"Good air quality, solid infrastructure, decent medical facilities, low crime and health risks contributed to Singapore maintaining its top position in the global ranking for quality of living for Asian assignees," ECA regional (Asia) director Lee Quane said in the statement.
The agency's annual location rating system evaluates multiple factors to assess the quality of living in 450 locations worldwide for enabling global firms fix allowances to their employees.
Factors for the assessment include climate, availability of health services, housing and utilities, political tensions and air quality.
In the Indian sub-continent, Pakistani cities like Islamabad and Karachi, ranked at 261 and 269 in the survey, have the region's worst scores for personal security and social-political tensions.
"They are the hardest locations surveyed in Asia for expatriates to adapt to living and working in," Lee said.
While Hong Kong is ranked high as a place for Asian expats to live, the ECA survey revealed that its attractiveness has dropped.
"The unrest in recent months and restrictions on movement of people due to socio-political factors worsened living conditions in Hong Kong," Lee recalled.
Martial law declaration led to a worsening in socio-political scores for ranking locations in Thailand.
While Malaysian locations fell in the global ranking, its capital Kuala Lumpur slipped to 118 from the previous rank of 115.
Shanghai, ranked 110 globally, is rated as China's most liveable city followed by Beijing at 122.
Denmark capital Copenhagen, ranked seventh globally, is the European city that offers the best quality of living for Asian assignees followed by Swiss city of Bern.
In North America, Vancouver at 24 is the most liveable location followed by San Francisco at 40.
Dubai, ranked at 109, is the location in the Gulf region which requires the least adjustment for Asian assignees overall.
For Asian assignees going to Africa, Port Louis, Mauritius, (118) affords the best quality of living followed by Cape Town (133).

10 hilarious Indian pregnancy myths busted!

When you are pregnant be ready to get advices from all directions, pouring in generously without any second thought given to them. The problem is not the well-meaning advices, but that they are seldom correct scientifically and are based on superstitions passed from one generation to the other. Most women believe in them out of fear and for the sake of her baby’s well-being. However, it is wise to validate these advices which are just myths, before you start acting on them. Here are 10 common ones busted by Sonali Shivlani, an Internationally Certified Pregnancy, Lactation and Child Nutrition Counsellor.
Myth 1: Hanging pictures of beautiful babies on the wall result in cute babies.
Fact: Looks and features of the newborn depend on genetics. Hanging photos of cute babies does not ensure any particular features in your baby. However, having good looking or positive pictures on the wall can surely make the would-be mother feel good which is great for overall pregnancy and well-being. Remember, stress alone holds a lot of power to hamper your baby’s growth and development both aesthetically and physiologically. So be positive always. Still want cute baby pictures, check our gallery with 25 baby pictures that will make you go awe.
Myth 2: Drinking coconut water after the seventh month of pregnancy makes the baby’s head as large as the coconut.
Fact: We are wondering from where did this come from. This is completely false. Coconut water is a good source of potassium and should be consumed in moderation for optimum gut health. It will have no impact on the size of the baby’s head. Here are more reasons why pregnant woman should drink coconut water.
Myth 3: Drinking coconut water will result in the baby having a lot of hair and the mother gettingacidity.
Fact: Again, not true! The baby generally lays head-down in the third trimester and the acidity that the mother suffers from is a result of her growing belly. As the mother progresses into her pregnancy the uterus stretches out and pushes the intestine upward which makes the process of digestion sluggish and is responsible for all the acidity and constipation.
Myth 4: Eating something white first thing in the morning will result in a fair-skinned baby.
Fact: Oh really! Then all that milk and bread would have turned anyone white by now. This is sheer myth. The colour of the food you eat has no bearing on the complexion of your newborn. Like looks, it too depends on your genetics. However, here is a list of top 10 foods you should be having during pregnancy.
Myth 5: One should not indulge in any activity during an eclipse else the baby will be born with some deformity.
Fact: An eclipse is a natural phenomenon. It will definitely not cause any defects or deformities in the baby. This does not mean you look at one with the naked eye. General precautions need to be taken by everyone, not just by pregnant women.
Myth 6: The shape of the stomach can help determine the sex of the baby.
Fact: The stomach is shaped on how the baby lays in the womb. Whether it is a girl or boy cannot be deciphered based on the shape. Here are nine other funny ways in which people try to predict their baby’s gender.
Myth 7: The type of cravings a pregnant woman has can determine the sex of the baby.
Fact: Pregnancy cravings are essentially due to nutritional deficiencies in the body and not because it is a girl or boy. There is no concrete proof that craving for a certain food means the woman is expecting a girl and vice versa.
Myth 8: The mother’s complexion determines the sex of the baby.
Fact: It’s actually hormones which cause skin changes during pregnancy like patches on the neck, dark underarms and at times even darkening of skin on the face which is called the pregnancy mask. Here are a few home remedies for skin care during pregnancy.
Myth 9: Eating ghee or oil will help the baby slide out from the vagina during labour.
Fact: Ghee or oil does not help the baby slide out easily in any way. All they do is add a whole lot of calories in your body which becomes difficult to shed once the baby is born. Refrain from eating piles of fatty food and eat a healthy, balanced meal. Here is all that you need to know about weight gain during pregnancy.
Myth 10: Pregnant women need to double their diet quantity as they are eating for two people.
Fact: This is quite common but is untrue. Though you are eating for two people, you do not have to double the quantity of food. All you need to add is 300 extra calories. The healthier options you choose, the better it is. Pregnant women need extra nutrition from all food groups and not just fat. Never indulge in eating for two, here are reasons why it is not healthy.

The 24-Minute Morning Routine That Will Make You an Entrepreneurial Rock Star

Time is one of your most coveted and scarce resources as an entrepreneur, so maximizing pockets of time in your day through a productive routine is crucial.
Probably the most important period of your day is when you first wake up. Your morning routine can set you up for massive success the whole day. You can chose to linger in bed, hitting snooze and dreading the alarm, or you can set yourself up for massive daily productivity and success with the introduction of a simple 24-minute routine.
Most of this routine you’re probably already doing in some form or another, but if you’ll follow this format and stick with it for a few weeks, you’ll find yourself hopping out of bed in the morning renewed and looking forward to what lies ahead.

Here are the six steps to your ultra-productive 24-minute morning routine.

1. Brush your teeth (2 minutes)

One of the first things you should do when you get out of bed is brush your teeth. While you sleep, your mouth produces less saliva and actually dries out. Unfortunately with that decrease in saliva comes an increase in bacteria. So one of the best things you can do when you get up is to take two minutes to thoroughly brush your teeth and tongue to get rid of the influx of nighttime bacteria.

2. Drink water (1 minute)

Just like your mouth is dry, the rest of your body and brain need water after your sleep. After you’ve cleaned your mouth, you should go get a massive glass of water and drink away. I prefer to drink my water after I brush, simply because I don’t like the idea of drinking a big glass of water and flushing down massive quantities of nighttime bacteria into my system.

3. Meditate (7 minutes)

Most people make the mistake of thinking that they have to meditate for 30, 40 or even 60 minutes to experience results from meditation. I’ve found that six to seven minutes first thing in the morning is a great way to start off the day with a calm, clear head.
I personally enjoy the free Headspace app to guide me through seven minutes of meditation, but you can just as easily sit in a quiet, softly lit room and practice breathing in and out.
You can up it to 10 minutes or more if you want, but seven has been the sweet spot for me. It’s about getting some stillness and silence in the mind, nothing else. Doing it every day has introduced a calmer mindset and clearer perspective throughout my waking hours.

4. Focus (5 minutes)

How is five minutes of focusing different from meditation? The key is the intention behind the action. In meditation, I’m deliberately trying to introduce silence to my brain. No focus on thoughts, actions, to-do lists or anything other than just my breathing.
With five minutes of focusing, I set an alarm on my phone and for five minutes try to deliberately walk myself through the actions and needs of the day. This is less about looking at my calendar and more about trying to prioritize my day and lay out activities in chunks. I’m focused on the key business initiatives for the day and how I might achieve them, setting my mental goals for when I’m going to leave the office to work out or spend time with my family -- whatever needs to get done in the day ahead of me that’s going to set me up for success.
It’s about focusing on how I want the day to go ahead of me so that when I lay down to sleep tonight, I can look back on the success of the day’s outcomes and shift my focus accordingly tomorrow for better results. When the alarm goes off after five minutes, I walk away from the focusing and let the day unfold. No more fussing. I know what I need to do and my brain has the clarity now to approach the day right.

5. Exercise (7 minutes)

Working out and moving is a huge part of building massive success. It’s not about being in perfect shape, but you have to move your body to move your brain and ideas around. I definitely commit time to formally working out, but I’ve noticed that inserting five to seven minutes of exercise into my morning wake-up routine really helps my body with the movement it needs to feel energized until I get to the gym later.
There’s a great app called the 7-Minute Workout that offers just enough of a quick movement blast to get my body going. It’s a great addition to your rock-star morning routine.

6. Stretch (2 minutes)

After the quick blast of physical movement -- stretch! As we age, we are less flexible. You don’t have time for pulled muscles, your back going out or any of the other physical limitations that can often come with a stress-packed, fast-paced entrepreneurial lifestyle. Taking two minutes to stretch every day will greatly improve your flexibility of body and mind.
That’s it. After those six simple steps you’ll be ready to hop in the shower and then attack your day for massive success. You’ll have the flexibility, mental acuity and physicality to have a leg up on your competition and the workday ahead. Keep yourself strong, healthy and mentally fit with this simple but powerfully effective morning routine.

Azim Premji – From sunflower oil to software services

Over the past decade and a half, India has seen the business community grow at a rapid pace. Fronting this growth have been a few names who have left an indelible mark on the way we do business in this country. These are people who have shaped the Indian economy. These are people who have changed our lives. These are the Indian Business Icons. As CNBC-TV18 completes 15 years, it gives you the opportunity to select your business icon over the same period. A platform where these leaders will face the verdict that truly matters. Read on and Vote.
Azim PremjiAzim Premji
In 1966, Mohamed Hashem Premji passed away, leaving his son Azim Hasham Premji to rush back from pursuing an engineering degree at Stanford University. The younger Premji had to take over the reins at the company his father had founded, Western Indian Vegetable Products. The firm manufactured vegetable oils and soaps. It was still a while away from becoming the technology byword it is today, but under Azim Premji, the process of diversification to serve broader markets began rapidly. Toiletries, baby care products, bulbs and hydraulic cylinders were all added as the company started to stake a claim as a growing consumer goods player.

It wasn’t a smooth transition. Premji was just 21 at the time and a shareholder at the next AGM questioned his ability to lead the company, suggesting he sell out his share and step aside in favour of more seasoned managerial candidates. Spurred by criticism, Premji guided the company’s growth, looking out for a breakthrough opportunity.
Destiny came knocking in the 1980s when government policy led to majors like IBM being turned out of the country, leaving a gap that Premji decided to fill with typical foresight and alacrity. Renamed Wipro, the sleek, euphonious name reflected an increasingly dynamic, even cutting-edge business vision, driven by technology. Inking a partnership with an American computer firm, Wipro commenced the manufacture of microcomputers for the emerging Indian market. By the 90s, Wipro had teamed up with GE to offer medical systems, acquired Acer Computers and broadened its portfolio of IT solutions and services.
In the 2000s, Premji spearheaded a focus on quality which helped Wipro’s IT offerings rise above the rest, earning India’s first ISO 14001 certification for software services and technology and the world’s first SEI CMM Level 5 certification for software.
Today, Wipro as a whole has a market capitalization $20.8 billion, as of 2014, and annual revenues of $7.3 billion as of 2013-14. It employees over 154,297 employees, operates in 61 countries and is the 7th largest IT services firm in the world. Not bad for a company that was a soap and oil manufacturer helmed by an unexperienced youngster just four decades ago.
What are the qualities that have enabled Premji to shape one of the biggest successes in modern India? A key fact has been faith in himself, in the face of naysayers. But confidence alone is not enough; his ability to take a long-term view, build from strengths and retain a cool head despite racking up a string of successes have been invaluable. He has always emphasized customer satisfaction as the key indicator of excellence and defined robust processes, organization-wide commitment and a culture of teamwork as the means to achieve excellence. Wipro’s quality certification and organizational commitment to Six Sigma quality processes reflect these principles.
Premji himself remains grounded, eschewing the luxuries available to one of India’s richest men, choosing instead to be one of the country’s leading charitable contributors. This mix of determination, vision and personal groundedness might well be the key to Wipro’s stellar business graph over the years.
