New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared a parliamentary bill for creation of Telangana state having 10 districts.
Divulging details, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that Hyderabad will be the common capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a period not exceeding 10 years.
Shinde said that the government wants the Bill to be tabled in Winter session of Parliament.
The Home Minister confirmed that both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will get special status under Article 371 D of Constitution for equitable opportunities.
The Cabinet’s decision comes after hectic parleys were held on GoM recommendations on Telangana.
The move to bifurcate Andhra is being made despite stiff opposition from various quarters including Andhra Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy who is opposed to the bifurcation of the state. Reddy, along with several MPs of the state, have reportedly threatened to quit if the new state is formed.
The Congress core committee had last month cleared the Telangana Bill that was prepared by the Group of Ministers.
Good response to TRS bandh against Rayala-Telangana
The bandh called by TRS in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, to oppose move to create Rayala-Telangana, evoked good response today in Hyderabad while the shutdown was near-total and peaceful in Telangana districts, police said.
"As many as 524 agitators were taken into preventive custody from different parts of the city," city Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma said, adding, that the over all situation was peaceful.
However, tension prevailed in the Osmania University (OU) campus here when pro-Telangana students pelted stones on security personnel who responded by lobbing tear gas shells.
Pro-Telangana lawyers boycotted court and the main gate of the Nampally court here remained closed even as another group barged inside the Gandhi Bhavan premises ? the headquarters of state Congress.
Angered over not being allowed to take out rally, protesters forcibly tried to breakthrough the barricades on the OU campus and also poured petrol and set on fire some of the barricades.
Normal life was affected in the city as well as at the Telangana districts due to suspension of RTC bus services even as educational institutions, business establishments remained closed.
