Bill Cowher, who lives in Raleigh, announces he is stepping down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. |
Raleigh resident and former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher is apparently prepared to return to the sidelines in 2011, ESPN's Chris Mortenson is reporting.
Cowher has been out of the coaching game for four years and has since been spending his time as a studio analyst on CBS's The NFL Today.
But if he's going to come back, it's not going to be to just any team. A source close to Cowher said the Dolphins, Texans and Giants top his wish list should those teams choose to make a switch.
He wouldn't discuss specific teams that have already fired coaches like Dallas, Denver and Minnesota.
The local team that isn't anywhere in the picture is the Carolina Panthers. Fans had been hopeful that Cowher would stay close to home and rebuild a young team in transition that likely has the No. 1 overall pick on the way.
Peter King of SI and NBC Sports reported on Sunday that the Panthers aren't likely to land Cowher because they won't spend the necessary money to land that kind of name. Instead Carolina will aim for a young offensive-minded, and less expensive coach.
Cowher went 149-90-1 in his 15 seasons in Pittsburgh and won Super Bowl XL in 2005.
