Update at 1:50 p.m. ET: CNN reports that the lockdown on Broward County (Fla.) schools has been lifted.
Earlier posting: Broward County (Fla.) school officials have locked down all schools in the county after receiving what police have deemed a credible threat that a man planned to shoot students and teachers, WSVN-TV reports.
The action came after a woman called a radio station and said her husband had told her he wanted to go to a school and start shooting, a spokesperson with the Broward County Sheriff's Office said. "We took that very seriously and all the schools were locked down," said the spokesperson.
"Our children and employees are safe at this point," schools' Superintendent James Notter told the Miami Herald.
The school district says it is the largest fully accredited system in the country with about 300 schools and 257,000 students.
