Bipolar Disorder:A psychiatric illnesses-When a child behavior problem goes beyond mere child tantrums, parents face bleak choices about how to treat them. If they seek psychiatric or psychological care? If a child should be put on medication or other behavioral therapy? If he or she be labeled with psychiatric illnesses such as bipolar disorder?
Slate has an exceptional view on the matter this week, which, unlike many previous articles on the subject, does not reduce parents who seek treatment for the gullible victims of fad diagnosis that simply want to drug away any sign of individuality in their children. Writer Darshak Sanghavi notes that the diagnosis of bipolar disorder in children was created ten years ago and since then has given his head on the acceptance by the mainstream medical establishment. Sanghavi writes:
All this has led to more diagnoses, supposedly bipolar epidemic among the people, children and the corresponding increase in pediatric use of antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and other drugs often used to treat bipolar adults. More than 8,000 children in Massachusetts were prescribed antipsychotics such as Zyprexa, for example … It’s worrying because, according to the British government review of the evidence behind the drug to treat conditions in children is “very limited”, and several drugs cause a lot of weight (about 20 pounds in two months on average), hormone problems, and other side effects.
However, criticizing the widespread proliferation and treatment of pediatric bipolar disorder miss an important fundamental problem. Normal families do not seek stigmatizing labels and give their children drugs daunting for the hell of it. They do these things because in my mind until the end.
Unfortunately, pharmaceutical companies looking to increase sales to benefit parents despair very much in its favor, and their strategy was especially successful considering the circumstances of the fragmented health system with a chronic lack of child psychiatrists and a little insurance for psychological or behavioral therapy, which does not carry the risk that medication. Bioethicist Carl Elliott also recently told me that the increase in bipolar diagnosis has contributed a huge spike in sales of antipsychotics. “Bipolar is a big one here,” he said. “Now, everybody’s got it. It used to be rare, but you can chart the rise, and it goes with the introduction of” atypical “antipsychotics”.
Now, more than 500,000 children are antipsychotics. And the biggest fines in U.S. history – amounting to several billion dollars – are paid by pharmaceutical companies over the past few years for the marketing of these drugs without FDA approval for treatment of children and the elderly. There is still no conclusive data on their long-term effectiveness or safety. Our children deserve better!…
