Petco will open its Satellite Support Center with about 100 employees, including several top executives, in June at 654 Richland Hills Drive in the Westpointe Corporate Center on the Northwest Side.
Between 40 and 80 employees are expected to move to San Antonio from the company's National Support Center in San Diego. As Petco's employment grows in San Antonio, the rest will be hired locally, starting next year.
The jobs will pay an average of about $57,700 a year. Ten percent of the jobs will pay $80,000 or more, Mayor Julián Castro said during Monday's announcement.
“This provides opportunities for people who have a good education,” Castro said.
“San Antonio was a logical choice,” said Charlie Piscitello, senior vice president for human resources. “People love their pets, and (the company) will continue. ... This expansion gives us the ability to grow.”
Petco's San Antonio office will carry out the financial aspects of the company's operations, including accounting, human resources, administrative services, ethics/compliance and risk management.
Piscitello said Petco's corporate citizenship activities in San Antonio will consist mainly of supporting about 15 local animal welfare organizations that provide spaying, neutering, adoption and other services.
Petco started its site-selection process in January with a list 37 possible expansion sites around the country, including the San Diego area, after the company reached capacity at its headquarters building in that city.
San Antonio outlasted the other two finalist cities, Dallas and Oklahoma City, said Mario Hernandez, president of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation.
