The Tony nominated Best musical features Eddie Clendening (Elvis Presley), Lance Guest (Johnny Cash), Tony Award® winner Levi Kreis (Jerry Lee Lewis), Robert Britton Lyons (Carl Perkins), Tony Award® nominee Hunter Foster (Little Shop of Horrors, Urinetown) and Elizabeth Stanley (Cry-Baby).
Love has been hailed as one of the greatest singers in pop music. Her first number one recording was “He’s A Rebel.” She worked with legendary producer Phil Spector on such songs as “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “He’s Sure The Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” and “Christmas Baby Please Come Home.” Love was recently nominated for the third time to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Love has performed the song “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” every year since 1986 on the last episode before Christmas of Late Night with David Letterman (NBC 1986 – 1992) and the Late Show with David Letterman (CBS 1993 to present). The song is always performed with Paul Shaffer and the show’s house band. Letterman has stated that the annual performance is his favorite part of Christmas.
“Million Dollar Quartet” is the name given to recordings made on Tuesday December 4, 1956 in the Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The recordings were of an impromptu jam session among Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash. It was arguably the first supergroup.
Written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott, the musical dramatizes the Million Dollar Quartet session. It premiered at Florida’s Seaside Music Theatre and was staged at the Village Theatre in the Seattle area, breaking box office records. The musical opened for a limited run at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre on September 27, 2008. The show was transferred and is currently playing at Chicago’s Apollo Theater where it opened on October 31, 2008.
The Broadway production opened on 11 April 2010, with a cast featuring Eddie Clendening as Elvis Presley, Lance Guest as Johnny Cash, Levi Kreis as Jerry Lee Lewis, Rob Lyons as Carl Perkins and Hunter Foster as Sam Phillips.
